Serious gynaecological pathology in children and adolescents is rare. However, gynaecological symptoms are relatively common and it is important that all gynaecologists can make a correct assessment and plan appropriate management. Looking after children and their families requires specific and sensitive skills and this is even more so when dealing with adolescent patients. This tutorial will cover investigation and management of common problems in paediatric and adolescent gynaecology. It will also address some of the aspects of rare congenital anomalies.
Learning objectives When you have completed this tutorial you will be able to: - understand the anatomy and physiology of the prepubertal girl
- understand normal puberty and changes that occur
- investigate and manage common gynaecological problems in pre-pubertal girls
- investigate and manage teenage menstrual dysfunction
- evaluate mullerian anomalies including obstruction
- understand the causes of ambiguous genitalia and current treatment options
