Cancer occurring during pregnancy is a rare event, but with an overall incidence of 1:1000 it is likely that most obstetricians will be involved in the care of a pregnant woman with cancer at some point during their training. This tutorial outlines the types of cancers more commonly encountered during pregnancy and their management. We will also look at the effect of cancer on the pregnancy and the effect of pregnancy on the cancer.
Learning objectives When you have completed this tutorial you will be able to: - understand the relative incidence of different cancers occurring during pregnancy
- understand the principles of management of the more common cancers
- understand the impact of pregnancy on the utilisation of chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery in the management of cancer
- gain the knowledge with which to counsel pregnant women with cancer regarding their prognosis and that of their pregnancy.
