Introduction to preparation of the patient for theatre

This tutorial costs £10.00

Preoperative management of patients is an exercise in anticipating problems. As a member of the gynaecology team, one of your responsibilities is to screen elective and emergency admissions, bringing to light any coexisting medical problems that might affect the outcome of treatment and investigating these appropriately.

The purpose of preoperative assessment is to optimise the fitness of the patient before surgery. This tutorial will help you explore your current approach to assessing the operative risk for patients. Following reflection and learning, the tutorial will improve your understanding of risk assessment for surgery and help you to accurately assess the risks for patients and reduce these by forward planning.

Learning objectives

When you have completed this tutorial you will be able to:

  • understand the factors that need to be considered prior to a decision to operate
  • understand the factors that need to be considered prior to admission for surgery
  • apply this knowledge to minimise the risks of surgery in general and with respect to specific circumstances.
